Destination spotlight – the Algarve

The Algarve

The Algarve is Portugal’s southernmost region and a premier destination for visitors seeking a blend of stunning natural beauty, rich history, and vibrant culture. Famous for its golden beaches, crystal-clear waters, and dramatic limestone cliffs, the Algarve’s coastline stretches for around 100 miles, offers numerous opportunities for swimming, boat trips and a range of water sports.

Attractive towns like Lagos, Albufeira, and Portimão draw visitors with their charming cobbled streets, bustling markets, and lively nightlife. Vilamoura too is famous for its extensive and inviting marina. Lined with upscale restaurants, boutiques and bars as well as a broad sandy beach, which extends all the way to Faro, the regional capital.

Travel

The Algarve is served primarily by Faro Airport (FAO), which is the region’s main gateway. The international airport has connections to various European cities and some direct long-haul flights, especially from the UK, Germany, and other European hubs. International flight access will be further improved this May, when United Airlines commence regular flights between Faro and Newark (EWR), USA.

The region is blessed with a superb selection of five-star hotels and resorts:

With excellent conference and meeting facilities, the region is attracting both conference and incentive business from across Europe and beyond.

Sustainability

In 2019, The Observatory for Sustainable Tourism of the Algarve was created as a result of a partnership between the tourist boards, local government and universities of the region.

The Observatory’s mission is a set of objectives with a three pronged approach to be achieved in the short, medium and long term, among which are the following:

  • Define and implement a model for monitoring tourism activity and its impacts and provide information to public and private decision-makers
  • Create an environment for reflection, learning and awareness of the need to promote sustainable tourism
  • Promote communication and networking

These objectives aim view to develop the Algarve as a healthier, greener, resilient and regenerated destination with a better quality of life.
